We are firm believers in the power of performance art to transform individuals and communities in meaningful ways.
By aiming to provide a rich and varied landscape for learning and growth, live performance can help us develop a deeper sense of connection with ourselves, with others and with the underlying common humanity that we all share, no matter where we’re from — or even whether we’re the ones doing the performing or sitting in the audience.
Moreover, theatre and other performance arts can also serve as a powerful means for social activism and advocacy, as they provide a platform for raising awareness about important issues and inspiring change
“The arts aren’t just about making pretty pictures and singing pretty songs. There are skills that are applicable to life. And as an artist, I have the ability to make someone see something from a different perspective and make someone feel seen.” -Teaching Artist
Engaging with the creative process together in groups is an opportunity to practice self-expression, collaboration and communication in a safe and supportive environment. That’s where devised theatre and our Dialogue and Difference (D&D) method come in, led by professional Teaching Artists to individual communities, both in Portland and around the world.
Each of our programs seeks to open people up to different perspectives and experiences, which can help us get closer to a more peaceful and just society. We believe these perspectives and skills are essential for building healthy and empathetic relationships, resolving conflicts, and finding meaning in our lives — which all of us need to thrive on this shared planet we call home.
“When we share ideas, share acceptance of others, share our stories, we pave the road to peace and understanding.” - Teaching Artist
