Aleksandar Obradović (Serbia)

My name is Aleksandar Obradović and I am a storyteller.

I believe that cultural patterns are delicate membranes that arise from the specific needs and experiences of each community. They enable them to function harmoniously.

I grew up in a country that was falling apart. Since then I have been searching for stability and coexistence in this world, both personal and communal. I am learning about the world and what we can do for it, and for ourselves. I am passionately interested in the cultural codes left by cultures before ours, as well as the cultures that exist around us that are not part of the mainstream narrative of the globalising world. I write about them, draw them and talk about them in order to tear them from oblivion and to share their riches with others.

I came to CSP not knowing if I needed the fellowship at all. I discovered in Portland that I didn't even know what I needed. I was welcomed by the wonderful crew of the H2M theater, which unconditionally supported all my creative processes. And they believed in me, like few people before.

Staying in Portland allowed me to meet successful artists, inspiring individuals and to learn a lot about storytelling. And perhaps most importantly - I learned a lot about my creative path and expression. H2M enabled me to have my first small exhibition of my graphics and stories, and then my first public storytelling performance. The fellowship ignited a spark of artistic courage in me, which I carried across the ocean, back home.
